Can you reverse or cancel a DebiCheck debit order?

Not if it matches what you approved. A DebiCheck that goes off on the agreed date and for the agreed amount cannot be disputed or reversed. A debit outside what you approved can be disputed with your bank within 60 days. To change or end the arrangement, talk to the business. Stopping it at the bank does not cancel what you owe.

The rule in short

When you can dispute a DebiCheck

FNB lists the reasons you can dispute a DebiCheck: it is not the allowed amount, not the agreed date, or not what you agreed to.

PASA says to contact the business first, because the agreement is between you and the business. If that does not work, go to your bank.

You have 60 calendar days, counted from the day after the debit went off. Not every dispute leads to a reversal.

How long can you reverse a DebiCheck?

Only debits that do not match what you approved can be reversed, and only if you dispute within 60 days. After 60 days, PASA says to contact your bank and follow its process. Nedbank says that after 60 days you must contact the business directly.

Can you cancel or remove a DebiCheck?

Only the business can cancel a DebiCheck mandate. FNB says this. If you want to change or end the arrangement, contact the business.

Your bank cannot cancel your agreement. PASA says the contract is between you and the business, not the bank.

Your bank can suspend a DebiCheck so that future debits do not go off. Suspending it does not cancel your agreement, and you still owe the money. Capitec says suspending is for a debit order that does not match what you approved or is no longer valid.

When your agreement ends, the business should cancel the mandate. If debits carry on after that, FNB says you can ask your bank to suspend it.

If you cannot pay this month

Talk to the business before the debit date and ask for a payment arrangement. PASA recommends this.

Do not cancel or suspend a valid DebiCheck to skip a payment. FNB warns this breaks your agreement. It can put your account in arrears, add interest and charges, and hurt your credit record.

PASA also says there may be a charge if a debit order is unpaid.
