Declined a DebiCheck by mistake? Here is what to do
You cannot undo a decline yourself. Contact the business that sent the request, tell it you declined by mistake, and ask it to send a new DebiCheck request. Then approve the new one. Your agreement with the business still stands.
What happens when you decline
- The debit order does not go through as a DebiCheck. Standard Bank says a rejected debit order won't go through.
- Your agreement with the business still stands. FNB, Absa and GoTyme all say you still owe what you agreed.
- The business may collect in another way. Absa says it can collect later that day as a normal debit order. Nedbank says a Registered Mandate may be set up.
- Some loans stop. Nedbank says you cannot continue a Nedbank personal loan application if you decline.
How to get a new request
- Contact the business that sent the request. Use the number on your contract or its official website.
- Say you declined the DebiCheck by mistake and ask it to send a new request. FNB gives this advice.
- Check the business has your correct cellphone number and bank account.
- When the new request comes, check the business name, amount and date, then approve it in time.
If the request expired
It works the same way. FNB says to tell the business you missed the cut-off time and ask it to send the request again.
GoTyme says that if you do not answer in time, the debit order may still go off as a normal debit order.
If you approved by mistake
Discovery Bank says to contact the business to cancel or update the mandate. You cannot cancel an approved DebiCheck yourself.
Steps for your bank
Did it work?
Done. Your debit order is set up.
You do not need to approve it again every month. You will only be asked again if the business changes the amount or the date.
What happened?
- Open your banking app and look in notifications or messages. Some banks show the request only inside the app.
- Update your banking app, then log in again.
- Turn on notifications for your banking app in your phone's settings.
- Check that your bank has your current cellphone number.
- Ask the business to send the request again once your app is open.
Ask the business to send the request again. Have your banking app open and logged in before they send it.
A declined request cannot be undone. Ask the business to send a new request, then approve that one.
A real DebiCheck request comes from your own bank, inside its app, SMS, phone menu or ATM. It shows the business name, the amount and the collection day. Your bank will never send you a link to approve it or ask for your PIN, password or OTP.
Ask a question below, or call your bank on the number on the back of your card.
Who asked you to approve?
Type the name of the shop, lender or insurer. We will write a message asking them to send the request again.
Send it the way you usually talk to them: SMS, email, or the number on your agreement.
Questions people ask
Can I undo a declined DebiCheck in my banking app?
None of the banks we checked publish a way to undo a decline yourself. Ask the business to send a new request.
Will the business still take the money if I declined?
It may. FNB and Absa say the business can still collect in another way, just not as a DebiCheck, because your agreement still stands.
What happens if you don't accept a DebiCheck?
The request expires. The business may still collect as a normal debit order or a Registered Mandate. Ask the business to send a new request if you want to approve it.
Does a DebiCheck expire?
Yes, a request you have not answered expires after its time limit. That can be 2 minutes, the end of the day or the end of the next business day.
