No DebiCheck request or pop-up? Why, and how to fix it
Usually the business has not sent the request yet, or your bank has an old cellphone number for you. Ask the business to confirm it sent the request, update your number with your bank, and look for the request in your banking app, not only in your SMS.
Common causes
- The business has not sent the request yet. FNB says the business, not the bank, starts every DebiCheck.
- Your bank has an old cellphone number. Standard Bank, FNB, Absa and Nedbank all say the bank needs your current number.
- The business has the wrong cellphone number or bank details.
- The request went to your banking app, not your SMS. FNB says to check your in-app messages.
- The request expired. Some requests must be answered within 2 minutes, others by the end of the day or the next business day.
- You are not registered for cellphone banking, so the phone menu (USSD) does not work. Standard Bank and Capitec say you must register first.
- You used your card and PIN when the debit order was set up. Absa says it is then already approved, and you do not need to do anything.
- You are using an old app. GoTyme says the old TymeBank app has been discontinued.
What to do
- Ask the business if it has sent the request, and check it has your correct cellphone number and bank account.
- Update your cellphone number with your bank.
- Open your banking app and look for messages, notifications or a list of waiting DebiChecks.
- If your bank offers it, check for the request at an ATM or on your bank's phone menu.
- If it expired or never came, ask the business to send the request again.
- Still stuck? Call the number on the back of your bank card.
Where to look at each bank
- Capitec: the SMS from Capitec, then log in to the Capitec app, where a message about your waiting DebiCheck shows. Or call 0860 10 20 43.
- FNB: log in to the FNB App and tap 'Take me There', or check in-app messages. Also *120*321#, Online Banking or an FNB ATM, for the day or up to 48 hours.
- Absa: Absa Online under Payments, Authorisations, DebiCheck debit orders, or an Absa ATM under Other transactions.
- Nedbank: in the Money app, tap your account, then Debit orders, then Mandates to authorise. Or dial *120*001# and choose DebiCheck.
- Standard Bank: the SMS from Standard Bank, the app, or *120*2345#. Or call 0860 123 000.
- GoTyme (TymeBank): the notification or SMS from GoTyme, in the GoTyme Bank app.
- Other banks: open your banking app and check notifications, or call the number on the back of your card.
A safety check
A real request comes from your own bank: in its app, its SMS, its phone menu or its ATM. PASA says banks never send a link to approve a DebiCheck and never ask for your PIN or password. Planar never asks for your PIN, password, OTP or card number.
Steps for your bank
Did it work?
Done. Your debit order is set up.
You do not need to approve it again every month. You will only be asked again if the business changes the amount or the date.
What happened?
- Open your banking app and look in notifications or messages. Some banks show the request only inside the app.
- Update your banking app, then log in again.
- Turn on notifications for your banking app in your phone's settings.
- Check that your bank has your current cellphone number.
- Ask the business to send the request again once your app is open.
Ask the business to send the request again. Have your banking app open and logged in before they send it.
A declined request cannot be undone. Ask the business to send a new request, then approve that one.
A real DebiCheck request comes from your own bank, inside its app, SMS, phone menu or ATM. It shows the business name, the amount and the collection day. Your bank will never send you a link to approve it or ask for your PIN, password or OTP.
Ask a question below, or call your bank on the number on the back of your card.
Who asked you to approve?
Type the name of the shop, lender or insurer. We will write a message asking them to send the request again.
Send it the way you usually talk to them: SMS, email, or the number on your agreement.
Questions people ask
Why didn't I get a DebiCheck SMS?
Usually because the business has not sent the request yet, or your bank has an old cellphone number. Some banks send the request to your banking app instead of by SMS.
Where do I find a DebiCheck on the Capitec app?
Capitec's guide says a message about your waiting DebiCheck shows after you log in to the app. If it does not, call Capitec on 0860 10 20 43 or visit a branch.
I got the SMS but nothing shows in the app. What now?
Nedbank says to contact the bank and try an ATM or a branch. At other banks, call the number on the back of your card, or ask the business to send the request again.
How long does a DebiCheck request stay open?
It depends on the request and the bank: from 2 minutes to the end of the next business day. FNB says a request can stay visible for the day or up to 48 hours. Check the time in your bank's message.
